Fall Car Care Tips

We don't know about you, but we're certainly ready for fall and cooler weather.

While you may be thinking of apple picking, flannel and pumpkin spice lattes, don't forget one important thing: your car's maintenance. Below, we've highlighted several tips to help you get ready for the changing season.

1. TIRE TREAD AND PRESSURE

A decrease in temperature can cause tires to lose pressure; in fact, they can lose one pound of pressure for every 10-degree Fahrenheit drop. If you're not sure about your tires' pressure, consult you owner's manual. To check the tread, use the penny test. Slide a penny into the tread grooves, and if all of Lincoln's head shows, your treads are less than the recommended 2/32” of tread depth (according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration). If your vehicle currently has summer tires, consider switching to all-season tires.

2. BATTERY

Because cold weather may wear your car's battery down, fall is a great time to prepare for those cold days ahead. Take a look at the battery connections to ensure that they're tight, clean and free of corrosion. It's also good to run a battery test to make sure it's performing as it should. If it's over three years old, it may need to be replaced.

3. HEATING AND COOLING

Speaking of cold weather, it's also important that your car's heating and cooling functions work properly. This isn't only for you and your passenger's comfort, but it's also a safety precaution since you may need to defrost the windows to see clearly.

4. LIGHTS

Fewer daylight hours means that you'll need to use your lights more frequently. Check all of your lights, and replace any that aren't working. Don't forget to check brake lights and turn signals.
